Protest the Eviction of the Vialdores Family

Monday, May 3, 2010

11:00am - 12:00pm

HUD Offices (77 W Jackson)
AIMCO is the largest operator of apartment buildings in the country, with assets worth almost $8 billion. They have a nationwide record of negligence and violations of tenant rights.

AIMCO’s subsidiary, Northpoint Properties, wants to evict Carol Vialdores and her four children from their home. Join Carol, neighbors, and activists to demand respect and repairs to long-standing problems in the building, and STOP THE EVICTIONS!

Last year, HUD intervened on behalf of another Northpoint resident, Erica Bledsoe, whose family was also facing eviction. We’re asking HUD to investigate AIMCO/Northpoint and continue defending the human right to housing.

Living on the Edge: Another Northpoint family faces eviction - Megan Cottrell - True/Slant

Carol Vialadores’ apartment was nearly empty the day I walked through the door. So empty that I stood there, confused, wondering if her family had already been evicted.

The three-bedroom unit on the third floor in a typical Rogers Park building was stark, with just a few pieces of scattered furniture and old curtains stretched across the large windows facing the alley.

It wasn’t particularly homey, but then again, neither are the streets. That’s where Carol will be living with her three young children if she gets evicted next Thursday.

Thursday is her trial. A jury of her peers will decide whether the accusations against her are true, and whether she and her kids deserve to stay. No matter what they decide, one thing is for certain: Carol and her kids are living on the edge. And not in an Aerosmith kind of way. They’re living on the edge of what we would call a normal family life, and if they’re evicted, they will most definitely be diving off that cliff.
