The Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign will Enforce our Human Rights To Housing and continue fighting to stop all economically-motivated evictions in Chicago. We are no longer willing to wait for any authority to institute our human right to housing. We the People are Enforcing Our Human Rights!

Deeply disturbing result for HUD tenants
Mr. Walker and his wife, in eviction court today. A disabled man who could barely hold his head up, or move across the courtroom, is being put out on first strike even though he himself committed no crime and is not being charged with one. Somehow the 3 or so police that sit outside the Cabrini high rise, as well as the security guard who checks i.d. and takes names, didn't suspect a guest of having drugs, but Mr. Walker is supposed to know that.
Do you strip search your guests? Check this out: This man may have had a small amount of drugs on him, but he was there helping Mr. Walker take out his garbage and go for a walk. Mr. Walker, who has no income, was not eligible for a home health worker, probably becuz the state made so many cuts. Again, CHA and the mgt company are not alleging that Mr Walker had anything to do with those drugs, only that they were on his guest's person, and that is an "evictable" lease violation--no mediation, no probation, just out, and ineligible for future subsidy, though he is disabled.
Even the judge said he was unhappy to make the ruling, but the HUD/CHA provision is clear. He did "give" the family 60 days to find new housing, instead of the 7 that CHA was demanding. IT won't matter; he can't afford what's out there. Imagine. We are paying these folks to evict poor families: HUD, CHA, outsourced mgt, the Courts--what is the cost, not to mention the human cost?
We need a tenant's rights board to challenge all these evictions and violations of tenant's rights. CAE mtg to discuss this coming soon. Are you angry too? Then join us.

Meeting with Western Cape AEC
Great news! Jared Sacks, long-time volunteer with the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign and the Landless People's Movement, will be in Chicago this weekend. Hosted by the Northpoint Tenants Association and supporters, we'll discuss the work being done in Cape Town--sharing strategies/tactics that have helped build a movement against displacement due to privatization, much like that we see here in Chicago every day. Join us. Invite others please. We haven't had much planning time, so if you would like to help by spreading the word, or bringing a refreshment to share, that would be great.
