Monumental Vote on Chicago Public Housing Program for Formerly Incarcerated – Organizing Success!

Monumental Vote on Chicago Public Housing Program for Formerly Incarcerated – Organizing Success!

The Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) Tenant Service Committee has unanimously voted to start a pilot program which will allow formerly incarcerated women to move back into public housing. The program is going to the Housing Authority board for a vote on Tuesday, August 16th, and is more than likely to pass!

This exciting news is the result of years of organizing by the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign (C-AEC) and CHA residents, who met with members of the board and submitted recommendations for the program. The C-AEC hopes this program will be a model for other housing authorities to take similar action in line with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan’s recently issued recommendation that public housing authorities allow access to housing for people with criminal records. The pilot program, once it is passed Tuesday, will be an exciting step toward the realization of a human right to housing in Chicago and is especially significant since women face disproportionate barriers to accessing housing. The C-AEC will be present at the vote on Tuesday.

Congrats to the C-AEC on their success! Please keep a watch on this Tuesday’s upcoming vote!
