On Monday, August 29th at 9am, the Du Page 5 will appear at the Du Page County Judicial Center, Room 4003, 505 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton, Illinois. Sheriff's Deputies arrested the Du Page 5 - Holly Krig, Jorge Ortiz, Chris Poulos, Toussaint Losier, and Rory Fanning - while protesting the eviction of Luz Smedbron from her foreclosed home in Addison Township on the morning of July 29th. The protest had been called by the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign, a human rights organization, and joined by Smedbron's friends and neighbors.
After arresting these five protesters, Sheriff's Deputies charged them with Criminal Trespass to Real Property, Obstructing Service Process and Obstructing a Peace Officer. Additionally, Ortiz and Poulos were charged with Resisting Arrest. This will be the first court appearance for the Du Page 5.
Smedbron, a divorced mother of three, had sought for two years to keep her suburban home after being injured at work and finding that disability payments did little to help her cover the more than $3,000 monthly mortgage payment. Despite Smedbron's best efforts, her lender, Wells Fargo Bank, repeatedly denied her request for a home mortgage modification and foreclosed on her. Earier this year, Financial Advantage Mortgage, a real estate firm, purchased the Addison Township home at auction for nearly half of its market value and sought the eviction of Smedbron's family. Although homeless, Smedbron is currently seeking to have the sale of her home vacated by a court order.
The Du Page 5 will be joined in court by Luz Smedbron's family and other concerned residents of Du Page county, which has the fourth highest number of new foreclosures-related filings of any county in Illinois. They will also be joined by members of the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign, Community United Against Foreclosures and Evictions, and the Immigrant Solidarity Network
