Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign Press Release
May 3, 2010
Carol Vialdores and her four children are facing homelessness if they are evicted from their home of 16 years, a subsidized apartment in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood. The family faces eviction court on Thursday, May 6th, but a group of her neighbors and community allies will rally in front of the office of Housing and Urban Development’s Office in Chicago on Monday May 3rd to demand that officials intervene to stop this unfair eviction, as they have done in the past.
As over 3,000 families face eviction in Cook County, banks continue to foreclose on people’s homes, and public service budgets are slashed, Northpoint/Aimco, the corporation that manages Carol’s building along with many others in Chicago, is attempting to evict another low-income family from their apartment in the North of Howard neighborhood.
Nothing new for Northpoint/Aimco; last year, they attempted to evict Erica Bledsoe, (who had just lost her mother), along with the nieces and nephew her mother had been raising and whom she had adopted. In another building, in 2007, they evicted tenant, Kathy Cleaves-Milan for calling the police when her boyfriend threatened her and her child with a gun. They cited this “criminal activity” as a lease violation—even though she was the victim.
Tenants in these buildings are fighting back. They will be joined by the Chicago Anti-Eviction Campaign, and organizations, community leaders, and activists around Chicago, demanding that Ed Hinsberger, Director of Chicago’s Multi-Family Hub division, intervene on this subsidized housing eviction, as he did for the Bledsoe Family. They are also demanding an investigation of Aimco, who is receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal money, while we see cut backs in every public service area in the city and state.
